Working together

Where are you based and who do you work with?

Filling the GAAP is a fully remote practice. We work with individuals, sole traders, companies, trusts, non-profits and body corporates anywhere in South Africa, and with South Africans living abroad. Everything happens over video calls, WhatsApp, email and secure document sharing.

What do your designations mean?

Professional Accountant (SA) is the designation awarded by SAIPA to qualified accountants who may compile financial statements and act as accounting officers. Professional Tax Practitioner (SA) means registration with SARS as a tax practitioner through a recognised controlling body, with the right to represent you before SARS. Independent Reviewer (SA) means the holder may perform independent reviews of annual financial statements under the Companies Act.

Is the first consultation really free?

Yes. The first meeting is a conversation about your situation and what you need. If we can add value we will send you a clear quote. If you would be better served by doing it yourself, we will tell you, and show you how FTG Books can help.

Do I get FTG Books for free?

Yes. Every client on an accounting or tax engagement gets a free FTG Books subscription for as long as they remain a client. Non-clients can also use FTG Books on a paid plan.

How do I send you my documents?

You can upload them directly into FTG Books, share a secure cloud folder, or send them by email. We will give you a simple checklist of what we need for each engagement so nothing gets missed.

How are your fees structured?

Monthly retainers for ongoing accounting, payroll and tax work, and fixed once-off fees for returns, registrations and reviews. All prices on this site are indicative "from" prices and are confirmed in writing before any work starts. No surprise invoices.

Can you take over from my current accountant?

Yes, and there is no charge for the switch. We request a professional clearance from your current accountant, take over your SARS and CIPC access, collect your records and manage the handover so nothing falls through the cracks. The four steps are set out on the business services page.

What if SARS audits or verifies me?

We handle the response. Verifications, audits, requests for supporting documents, objections and appeals are all part of the service for retainer clients, and available at a fixed fee for everyone else.

Personal tax

Do I need to submit a tax return?

Most people earning above the tax threshold must submit a return. You do not need to if your total income is below R500,000 from a single employer, you have no other income, no deductions to claim and you were not given a travel or other allowance. If SARS has issued you an auto-assessment, check it before accepting; it does not always include everything.

When is the filing season?

For the 2026 season SARS issued auto-assessments from 1 to 12 July 2026, opened filing on 13 July, and closed it on 23 October 2026 for non-provisional taxpayers. Provisional taxpayers and trusts have until 22 January 2027. The pattern is similar every year: July to October for most people, January for provisional taxpayers. The tax calendar on this site is updated when SARS announces each season.

What is provisional tax and does it apply to me?

Provisional tax is a way of paying your income tax in advance during the year, in two payments (August and February), rather than in one lump sum on assessment. It applies if you earn income that is not subject to PAYE, such as freelance, business, rental or substantial investment income, above certain thresholds.

Can you help me claim my home office?

Yes, if you qualify. Employees need to work from a dedicated home office for more than half of their working hours and the space must be used exclusively for work. Sole traders have more flexibility. We will tell you honestly whether the claim is worth making given the capital gains tax implications when you sell.

Business, companies and trusts

Does my company need an audit, an independent review, or neither?

It depends on your public interest (PI) score and whether the company is owner-managed. Broadly: a PI score of 350 or more means an audit; between 100 and 349 means an independent review (or an audit if the statements were compiled internally); below 100 and owner-managed means you can compile your own statements. Use the PI score calculator on this site for an instant answer.

Which accounting software should I use?

If you are a client, FTG Books is free and we can see your data in real time. We also work in Xero, Sage and QuickBooks if you are already set up there and happy. The best software is the one your team will actually use consistently.

When must I register for VAT?

Since 1 April 2026 registration is compulsory once your taxable supplies exceed R2.3 million in any 12-month period, or you have a contractual obligation that will take you over R2.3 million. Before that the threshold was R1 million, so many businesses that had to register under the old rule can now deregister. You may register voluntarily from R120,000 in taxable supplies. Voluntary registration is sometimes a good idea and sometimes a cash-flow trap; we can model it.

What happens if my CIPC annual return is late?

Penalties accrue and, if the return stays outstanding, CIPC will begin deregistration proceedings, which can freeze your bank account and expose directors personally. We track every client's anniversary date so this never happens.
